The Mindset of a Business Class Artist: Owning Your Music Career

Jul 31, 2023

In recent years, my perspective on music has evolved, and I now believe that music is one of the most appreciating asset classes over time if approached with the right mindset. Having traveled across the country and met countless artists, I noticed a common problem – the lack of knowledge among artists about building a sustainable fanbase and monetizing their popularity. As the music industry expands exponentially, staying informed about current best practices becomes a challenge. However, if artists grasp these practices, they can create their own blue ocean and thrive without the need for cutthroat competition. This article explores the concept of a "business class artist" and how owning one's business and understanding the art of negotiation can lead to a successful and mutually beneficial career in music.

1. Owning Your Business:

A business class artist treats their music career as a business venture, recognizing that their platform and fanbase are invaluable assets. By taking control of their career and brand, artists become empowered to shape their own narrative and build a loyal audience.

2. Fair Compensation and Value:

In the business world, people are paid what they're worth, and the same applies to artists. Understanding their value and compensating others accordingly fosters healthy collaborations and long-lasting partnerships.

3. Embracing Licensing:

A business class artist has a thorough understanding of licensing and knows how to leverage it to their advantage. Licensing opportunities not only generate revenue but also expose their music to broader audiences through films, TV shows, commercials, and more.

4. Collaborative Money-Making:

Business class artists create opportunities to collaborate and make money with others in the industry. By fostering a network of like-minded individuals, they open doors to new revenue streams and innovative projects.

5. The Power of a Captivating Show:

Putting on an unforgettable live performance is crucial for any artist. A business class artist knows how to engage the audience, leaving a lasting impression and ensuring repeat attendance at future events.

6. Empowering the Fanbase:

A unique aspect of a business class artist is their ability to involve their fanbase in money-making opportunities. From exclusive merchandise to fan-driven crowdfunding campaigns, artists create avenues for their fans to be part of the success.
